Due to its humanistic and generalist nature, and in view of the attention the Civil War continues to receive in public debate 90 years after the conflict, the course is also aimed at other people with broad cultural interests, such as the very many readers of historical and literary works on this subject. The course will also be of interest to some Senior students, who may relate to the course content more closely through their own family experience or who wish to enrich their knowledge with the guidance of specialists, as well as to the many international students at our university who often show interest in the most significant and best-known episode of our recent history, enabling them to broaden their knowledge of Spanish politics and culture. In a context where the debate on historical memory continues to be a central issue in society, the course offers tools to reflect on how historical narratives are constructed, how collective traumas are represented, and how later generations can reinterpret the past and learn from past mistakes. As this is a 20-hour general-interest course, it does not require specific prior knowledge of the subject, making it an accessible option for all audiences, and it may also resonate in the media and on social networks in connection with the anniversary of the Civil War and the current lively political debate.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Ponentes” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”3a8881db-5166-4708-be91-dfd90363dca0″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Speakers

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”bac8ece3-e969-4d21-a72c-ec40ff0005b1″ text_font=”||||||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Course directors: Álvaro Ribagorda and Alejandro Acosta. Link to CV.
Speakers:

Álvaro Ribagorda (UC3M).

Alejandro Acosta (UC3M).

Julián Vadillo (UC3M).

Eduardo González Calleja (UC3M).

Ana Martínez Rus (UCM).

Juan Carlos Sánchez Illán (UC3M).

Matilde Eiroa San Francisco (UC3M).

Alicia García Ruiz (UC3M).

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Titulo programa” _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”3a8881db-5166-4708-be91-dfd90363dca0″ custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Programme

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” header_4_font=”|600|||||||” header_4_text_color=”#c547e5″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Monday, 29 June
10:00–11:00. Given the context of national political polarisation, the international rise of the far right and current international tensions, it is once again very present in all debates. The 90th anniversary of the war is a highly significant commemoration; our university has some of the most outstanding specialists; and organising this course will make it possible to offer assessments and contributions to the academic, political and social debate of the moment, positioning UC3M among the institutions that promote these cultural activities. The course will connect academic analysis with critical reflection on the legacy of the Civil War in our society. In a context of intensifying debates of this kind and partisan distortion of the past on social media or by political actors, the course provides tools for rigorous analysis and invites joint reflection on the present and on the search for political legitimisation through the past. The course will place the Civil War and the debates around it in a global context, and will reflect on often overlooked realities such as its international dimension or the armed participation of the milicianas, highlighting women’s struggle for emancipation. Likewise, from a multidisciplinary approach, the course proposes reflection based on historiographical analyses, while also engaging with the various artistic, literary and cinematic perspectives on the subject. This will help students develop analytical and critical skills in key areas such as audiovisual communication, media discourse and cultural representations, and provide them with tools and critical capacity to create new digital, audiovisual or literary content.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=”on|on|on” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”bac8ece3-e969-4d21-a72c-ec40ff0005b1″ text_font=”|500|||||||” disabled global_colors_info=”{}”]

At the end of the course, students will be able to realise that the most emblematic value of the classical world is not the elitist nature of its education or a particular monumental aesthetic (to cite two typical categories of 19th-century interpretation), but rather its ability to address every human problem, transforming it into a source of personal and collective learning that is fruitful and always enriching. From this experience—capable of turning the intimate drama of existence into a rational subject (thus enabling the birth of philosophy and Attic tragedy), or the difficulties of communal life into political reflection, or the imitation of nature into art and technique—emerges that freedom of spirit that permeates all humanisms throughout history and remains one of the foremost ideals of today’s world.

Moreover, the classical tradition is much closer to the paradigms of digital culture than one might imagine: if “digital humanities” are, in a sense, a way of reimagining the traditional humanities, rethinking human development in relation to history and culture through new possibilities for creating and disseminating knowledge, it is well known that the legacy of Greco-Roman civilisation has been performing this same task for centuries, renewing itself in every era in line with the needs of societies that return to the study of Antiquity in order to find in it answers about their own time.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”CV” module_id=”Curriculum” _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#000000″ collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Texto cv” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”bac8ece3-e969-4d21-a72c-ec40ff0005b1″ text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” global_colors_info=”{}”]

CV

Course directors: Álvaro Ribagorda and Alejandro Acosta.

Álvaro Ribagorda is Associate Professor of Contemporary History and Director of the UC3M Institute of Politics and Governance.
He has undertaken research stays and delivered lectures at universities such as Cambridge, Sorbonne Université, El Colegio de México, the University of Évora and Sorbonne Nouvelle.
